The legends speak of four mystical blades of sweetgrass that allowed human and spirit to live together. The blades were all-powerful and could only be weakened by evil and selfish acts. Only then could the Blades be picked and braided into a sweetgrass bracelet, which would give the bearer power over all creation.

Four Blades tells the story of how the mystical Blades were first weakened, and the beginning of Saro and Gaia's quest to restore them. Tekana, a great Spirit Wolf Warrior, yearns for the song of Gaia, the earthly tribal chanter. With the help of the Dark Spirit Wind he steals her song and gives it to Tskawie, the Trickster Crow, who will sing Takana's praise forever. But Tskawie does not look as good as he sings. Takana is not satisfied. He brings Gaia to the spirit world, against her will, to sing only for him. Harmony has been broken the Blades have been weakened. The unrest begins.

Human and Spirit join together to free Gaia and return her to her earthly home. Young Saro, Gaia's best friend, is chosen to join the war party. Takana is defeated in battle and flees to seek the Blades knowing they can now be picked and braided and the power of creation will be his. Because of their courage and pure hearts Saro and Gaia are chosen to save The Four Blades from Tekana. Their adventure in the spirit world begins.
